Harvest is a capable general-purpose time tracker, built to serve freelancers, agencies and internal teams alike. Consultancies looking for a Harvest alternative are usually after something narrower: a way to submit timesheets, have someone formally approve them, and generate an invoice from the hours that were actually signed off. Where consultancies hit limits with Harvest
Consultancies bill clients for hours worked on their behalf, which means the hours usually need approving before an invoice goes out. Structured approval workflows are not available on every Harvest plan, and there is no separate approver role at any tier. That leaves consultancies stitching together email approvals, spreadsheets, or a separate tool to get sign-off before they can invoice with confidence.
How TimeSubmit is different
TimeSubmit uses structured weekly or monthly timesheets rather than a running timer. Consultants log hours against a project, with the date, hours, billable status and a description captured on every entry, across multiple projects in a single submission.
Approval workflows are included on every plan, including the trial. Admins assign one or more approvers per project, and a submitted timesheet follows a clear submit, review, approve or reject flow, with a reason required on rejection.
The approver role is the part that has no equivalent in Harvest. Approvers have their own account, review and act on timesheets, and never see billing rates or invoice totals. They are a member of the organisation and count towards the plan's seats, the same as any admin or consultant.
Invoicing is built from approved timesheets. Once a timesheet is approved, a consultant can generate a PDF invoice from it directly, or combine several approved timesheets into one invoice. Templates carry your logo, payment terms, VAT and bank details, and support multiple currencies including GBP, USD and EUR.
What TimeSubmit does not do
TimeSubmit does not sync with accounting software. It produces a PDF invoice with the figures and bank details on it, which is entered into your accounting package separately. There is no running-timer mode either. If your team needs to clock in and out against a live timer, that is not the model here; TimeSubmit is built around structured, periodic timesheets instead.
Pricing
Practice is $39 a month for up to five people, after a two-month trial (a card is required to start it). Core is $42 a month covering three members, then $14 for each additional member, or $33 a month billed annually. Margin is $110 a month covering five members, then $22 each. Is TimeSubmit right for you?
TimeSubmit fits consultancies that will not raise an invoice until someone has formally approved the hours behind it, and that want the approval and invoicing steps to live in the same platform as time tracking. If your team is happy tracking hours with a running timer and does not need a formal sign-off step before billing, a general-purpose tracker such as Harvest may suit you better.
